Our Story


Aavaran was conceptualized and founded in 2008 by Alka sharma, a textile graduate from the Indian Institute of Crafts and Design.
While attempting to revive and sustain the traditional craft of Dabu, hand block printing using mud resist technique, Aavaran also wanted to ensure the economic empowerment of the indigenous craft persons in the region.
Aavaran takes pride in its specialization of indigo dyeing, as well as other natural dyes to provide wider color options to customers. Intending to carry forward the tradition of indigo dyeing as practiced in Akola (an inheritance block printing cluster 70kms from Udaipur in Chittor district).
Aavaran has improved the rubbing fastness of indigo dye and experimented to achieve multiple tones of indigo.
Sticking to its mantra of sustainability and zero waste, the label offers a selection of accessories made of waste fabric including bags, pouches and potlis, jewellry made with fabric scraps jutis and a selection of products like durries.
Aavaran offers a unique platform for interaction and learning between designers and craftspeople.This is a closely-knit community with a well connected network which acts as a rich source of varied crafts skill. Headquartered in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
Aavaran employs 100 people in its design and production department as well as supports more than 200 women across five independently run training cum production centers in the villages of Debari, Kanpur, Matun, Zawar and Sindeshwarkala. Here women are provided training by Aavaran in machine stitching, handwork s like embroidery, button making, durrie making.
