Aavaran
The Story of Echoes of Rural India
Set amidst the heart of Mewar, Aavaran was envisioned in 2008 with the aim to revive and sustain the traditional art of Dabu Printing. Aavaran is the brainchild of Alka Sharma, a textile design graduate from the Indian Institute of Crafts and Design. With the vision of collaborating with indigenous craft-clusters, Aavaran is committed to empower & support artisans from around the region. We find our roots in the indigo dyeing practiced in Akola, a block printing cluster situated 70kms away from Udaipur in Chittor district. We hold expertise in achieving the finest of block prints in multiple tones of indigo, along with a careful selection of other natural dyes. Sustainability and zero-waste are important pillars of our design philosophy. We make sure to thoughtfully utilise our fabric waste, offering a beautiful collection of accessories ranging from bags, pouches, potlis, to toys , durries & jewellery.Aavaran is a strong ecosystem, a close knit community of 200+ artisans, with our headquarters at Udaipur, Rajasthan. We operate five independent training cum production centers in the villages of Debari, Kanpur, Matun, Zawar and Sindeshwarkala. These centres focus on empowering local women, training them for machine stitching, hand embroidery, button making, durrie making.Aavaran offers a unique platform for interaction and learning between designers and craftspeople. In a world where people relentlessly strive to move forward and faster, we at Aavaran pride ourselves in embracing the slow life. We meticulously design the finest of prints, handcrafted by our skilled artisans, creating one timeless piece at a time.
